On 1 December Omar, the singer behind neo-soul pop classic There’s Nothing Like This, will perform at Floridita. He told The Artful Diner what working with Stevie Wonder is like and what people can expect from his shows.
How would you describe your sound?
"It’s a mixture of jazz, funk, reggae, Latin, soul, classical: one big melting pot."
What’s the most memorable venue you’ve ever played?
"I’d say Dingwall’s in Camden would be the one with the most history. I’ve been playing there since one of my first gigs in 1988 so I’ve seen the changes over the years and the last time I did a show there was last year."
What can people expect from your live show when they see you?
"I’m playing with a full band. Most people will come out sweating so you should bring a flannel with you or some way of cooling off. It’ll be about an hour and a half's show full of new and old stuff."
Who is your biggest musical influence?
"Without a shadow of a doubt, Stevie Wonder."
You’ve worked with him, haven’t you?
"He wrote a song for me called Feeling You on my last album Sing (If You Want It). I’ve got to work with him through the years and been lucky enough to get him to write something for me. He’s the granddaddy of it all. I sat there with my mouth open most of the time."
Have you got any interesting stories about what he was like to record with?
"I do, but you can’t have them! They're not for public comsumption I’m afraid."
